Pizza Face (Spring 2004)

Faces round me, spinning faster,
fingers pointing, drown in laughter
but I don’t know, what’s so funny bout me?
nerves ashaking, stomach turning
butterflies, face is burning
but I don’t know, what is it I can’t see?

This time I fear I’m falling backwards again,
never knowing just where I’m falling from
it’s so unclear I must be losing my mind again
only to find I’m right back where I began

when I’m outside, birds are picking
people call me, finger licking good
and I can’t find, refuse from taunting jeers
“pepperoni, sock it to me”
“thirty minutes, or delivery’s free”
“no sir I’m not made with extra cheese”

This time I fear I’m falling backwards again,
never knowing just where I’m falling from
it’s so unclear I must be losing my mind again
only to find I’m right back where I began

does anyone out there see me for me?
or am I undeserving of your sympathy?
is your hunger for me just a one-way street?
so when you are full you can throw away the crust
(the crust is my tastiest part)
with some Papa John’s garlic sauce you can love me all
(you can love me all)
he you, give me back my left onion ear
(give me my left ear back)
if you don’t I’ll burn the roof of your mouth
(now you’ve made me angry)
